The District of Columbia files lawsuit against Proud Boys and Oath Keepers

DC sues far-right groups over Jan 6 riots. Washington DC sues Proud boys, Oath Keepers.

Where: Washington, DC

The Facts

District of Columbia Attorney General, Karl Racine, is suing two dozen Proud Boys and Oath Keepers members over the Jan 6 US Capitol insurrection.

The two far-right groups are being sued to recover damages and the millions of dollars the city spent defending the Capitol during the attack.

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Washington on Tuesday, names 31 members of the groups – accusing them of “conspiring to terrorize the District” in a “coordinated act of domestic terrorism.”

The lawsuit cites a post-Civil War (1871) law called the Ku Klux Klan Act as its basis.

Racine clarified that his intent in filing the lawsuit was “to hold these violent mobsters and violent hate groups accountable and to get every penny of damage we can.”
