In response to the Omicron Covid variant spreading through Southern Africa, President Biden stated, “I am ordering additional air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries. These new restrictions will take effect on November 29.”
President Biden emphasized the importance of global vaccination for this pandemic to end.
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated, “The @EU_Commission will propose, in close coordination with Member States, to activate the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region due to the variant of concern B.1.1.529.”
On Friday 26th November, the UK added South Africa to the red list for entering England.
South Africa’s health minister criticized the rush to impose travel bans.
