Scandinavian countries curb Moderna shots for young people
October 7, 2021
Scandinavians pause Moderna for the young. Side-effects include myocarditis & pericarditis.
Where: Sweden, Denmark, Norway
The Facts
Sweden suspended the use of Moderna for recipients below 30 years of age.
Denmark said recipients below 18 will not be offered the Moderna vaccine, and Norway has asked those under 30 to get the Pfizer vaccine instead of Moderna.
The decisions were based on an unpublished study with Sweden’s Public Health Agency saying that the vaccine poses an increased risk of side effects such as inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium – The risk, however, is minimal.
Authorities in Finland are expected to announce a decision soon.
The European Medicines Agency currently authorizes Spikevax (Moderna) to people 12 and older.
