Mayorkas announces new immigration guidelines. Guidelines emphasize discretion in treatment.
Where: Washington, DC
The Facts
On September 30th, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, announced new guidelines to set priorities for immigration enforcement.
Mayorkas stated, “Our guidelines will, in the pursuit of public safety, require an assessment of the individual and take into account the totality of the facts and circumstances.”
Apprehension and removal will be concentrated on noncitizens who pose a threat to US security and public safety.
The fact that a person is a noncitizen and removable will not alone be the basis for enforcement action against them.
The new guidelines will become effective on November 29th.
