Thousands of migrants, mostly Haitians, have clustered in Del Rio, TX, awaiting processing by overwhelmed federal officials.
Pictures and videos are being shared over social media showing border agents on horses using their reins, driving back migrants.
Secretary, Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas tweeted, “@DHSgov directed an immediate investigation of the events that were captured in the photographs & on video. We need this resolved swiftly.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted, “The images of inhumane treatment of Haitian migrants by Border Patrol—including the use of whips—are unacceptable.”
The US is extending restrictions on non-essential travel between the US and Mexico through October 21st to minimize the spread of Covid-19.
