The Facts

The White House announced a final extension of a pandemic relief pause on student loan repayments, interest, and collections until January 31st, 2022.

The pause was due to expire on September 30th.

The US Department of Education stated, “The Department believes this additional time and a definitive end date will allow borrowers to plan for the resumption of payments and reduce the risk of delinquency and defaults after restart.”

The Department will continue to work towards easing borrowers into repayment.

Senator Chuck Schumer and two fellow lawmakers stated, “We continue to call on the administration to use its existing executive authority to cancel $50,000 of student debt (per borrower).”
