According to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) enforcement data released on Thursday, the number of migrants detained along the US-Mexico border exceeded 200,000 for the first time in 21 years in July.
Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, said that 212,672 migrants were encountered at the southern border in July, a 13% increase over 188,000 migrants in June.
Mayorkas stated that many of those 212,000 resulted in expulsions under Title 42 public health protections, with 95,799 Title 42 removals.
Unaccompanied minors increased 24% from June to July. The daily average was 1,353 per day in July, compared to 794 in June.
CBP Acting Commissioner, Troy Miller, stated, “CBP continues to take necessary measures to safely manage the Southwest Border and protect the health of communities, personnel, and migrants themselves.”
