Where: United States

The Facts

On August 23rd, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued full approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty) for use in people aged 16 years and older.

Comirnaty is the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive full approval by the FDA in the country. The FDA had first authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine in the US on December 11th, 2020.

FDA Acting Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock tweeted, “As the first FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine, the public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality the FDA requires of an approved product.”

President Joe Biden referred to the full approval as a key milestone in the country’s fight against COVID-19 and urged citizens to get vaccinated.

Biden called on private sector companies, businesses, non-profit, State, and local leaders to issue vaccine requirements, stating, “Do what I did last month and require your employees to get vaccinated or face strict requirements.”
