Delta variant and Covid-19 cases on the rise

Covid on the rise due to Delta variant. White House issues call to extend moratorium.

Where: Washington, DC

The Facts

The CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report states, “During June 19–July 23, 2021, COVID-19 cases increased approximately 300% nationally, followed by increases in hospitalizations and deaths, driven by the highly transmissible B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant* of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.”

The CDC has prepared a confidential document that reportedly gives the magnitude of the threat posed by the Delta variant and suggests aggressive action to counter it.

The White House issued a call on Thursday for Congress to extend the moratorium on evictions nationwide – The reason cited is the threat of the Delta variant.

Jen Psaki stated, “Given the recent spread of the Delta variant, including among those Americans both most likely to face evictions and lacking vaccinations, President Biden would have strongly supported a decision by the CDC to further extend this eviction moratorium to protect renters at this moment of heightened vulnerability.”
