The Facts
On Friday, a New Jersey gym owner and a Washington state man became the first people charged in the January 6th riot to plead guilty to assaulting a law enforcement officer.
Both defendants could face more than three years in prison if the judge sticks to sentencing guidelines in the plea agreements.
The estimated sentencing guidelines for Scott Kevin Fairlamb (44) range from 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 years in prison.
The guidelines for Devlyn Thompson (28) range from less than four years to 4 3/4 years.
The Justice Department said that rioters assaulted around 140 police officers – around 80 of them were US Capitol police officers and 60 were DC Metropolitan Police Department.
The pleas come less than two weeks after police officers testified at a congressional hearing.
