Cuellar and Graham write to Biden. Lawmakers call for ‘border czar’.
Where: Washington, DC
The Facts
Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar and Republican Senator Lindsey O. Graham wrote a letter addressed to Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling on them to name a “border czar” by “special executive appointment.”
The letter asks Biden to name someone that will coordinate efforts to reduce the influx of migrants at the southern border.
The lawmakers wrote, “We know this current influx is neither seasonal nor temporary,” adding, “the situation on the border will worsen unless we enact policies that will end the surge and fix our broken immigration system.”
Biden and his top aides have characterized the surge of migrants as seasonal. There were over 188,000 illegal crossings in June, taking the number of migrants encountered this year to more than a million.
