▪ On Thursday, the Biden administration lifted sanctions on three former Iranian government officials and two Iranian oil companies.
▪ The decision comes days before a round of nuclear talks in Vienna.
▪ Since April, the US has been negotiating indirectly with Iran through intermediaries in Vienna to lift sanctions in exchange for compliance with the 2015 deal. Tehran has refused to speak directly with American officials.
▪ The 2015 deal traded sanctions relief in return for Iran’s agreement to accept limits on its nuclear program.
▪ President Trump withdrew the US from the nuclear deal in 2018 and imposed strict sanctions on Iran.
