US to meet with WTO on COVID-19 vaccine IP. Officials seek to support countries in need.

▪ White House chief of staff Ron Klain told CBS that US Trade Representative Katherine Tai will start talks with the World Trade Organization (WTO) “on how we can get this vaccine more widely distributed, more widely licensed, more widely shared.”
▪ Senator Bernie Sanders said the drug companies must be told to “allow other countries to have these intellectual property rights so that they can produce the vaccines that are desperately needed in poor countries.”
▪ Klain said the US had sent raw materials to India to make 20 million vaccine doses.
▪ Countries who need vaccines include South Africa, which is expecting 4.5 million doses of the vaccine from Pfizer.
