▪ The bill was drafted in response to the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
▪ Funding will reimburse costs incurred during the riot and subsequent response. In addition, the bill will implement new security measures, including a “Quick Reaction Force”.
▪ All Republicans voting opposed the bill. Three Democrats joined them in opposition: Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.
▪ Bush, Omar, and Pressley issued a joint statement saying, “A bill that pours $1.9 billion into increased police surveillance and force without addressing the underlying threats of organized and violent white supremacy, radicalization, and disinformation that led to this attack will not prevent it from happening again.”
▪ The bill will now be referred to the Senate.
