Biden backs IP waiver for vaccine

President Biden backs waiver on vaccine patents. WTO Director-General welcomes the decision .

▪ US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said, “The United States will now move forward with international discussions to waive the protections for the duration of the pandemic.”

▪ The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to Tai’s remarks stated, “I warmly welcome her willingness to engage with proponents of a temporary waiver of the TRIPS Agreement.”

▪ The WHO head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the move was a monumental moment in the fight against Covid-19.

▪ European Commission President, Ursula Von Der Leyen, said, Brussels is open to discussions, while French President Emmanuel Macron has backed the US’ decision.

▪ The German government said the proposal would potentially cause complications in the production of vaccines.
